Expelled (2014)

Expelled is about a high school student, Felix, that gets expelled after his pranks have gone too far. Felix needs help from his friends to try to hide it from his parents.

Why did I put myself through this? I’m stuck with the knowledge of the plot of this movie for a long time now. The acting is terrible. Lia Marie Johnson is top billed even though she appears in like 4 scenes and her role makes no sense. The plot itself is bad on so many levels. I spent more than half of the movie wishing for the sweet release of death. I’m going to stop now because I could spend hours ripping this movie to shreds. It’s bad.

How long did Felix think he was gonna be able to keep up the ruse that he wasn’t expelled? From the information we’re given in the movie, (Felix not wanting to sit behind a desk for six more years) we can assume he is a junior in high school. Felix really thought he could have somehow kept it up for the rest of the school year this year AND THEN KEEP IT UP FOR ANOTHER WHOLE YEAR. Idiotic.

Speaking of idiotic, Felix’s parents. His parents were oblivious to everything he was doing to a level where it was impressive how much they missed. Ben was playing horseshoes in the attic and they didn’t know anything about him being home.

I’m gonna get a little picky here, but this part bothered me a little more than the rest of the movie. When they track down “Roxy”, they found her using an IP address. Now, these tweets were probably sent from a cell phone as it is a teenager in high school tweeting real time events happening. The thing is, cell phones don’t have static IPs like computers. If anything, the IP found would be the one of the school wi-fi. I was just so into the idea of tearing this movie apart that I had to throw this in.

Also, how low security is this school? Most random people who don’t attend a school are lucky to get in once, but Felix managed to get back in a ton of times. Dude should have been arrested more than once.

Let’s talk about Katie. Why does she end up coming back into the film after the first pizza delivery? There was no indication that Felix and Katie spoke to each other at all after she helped him get the helicopter out of the tree. Next thing I know, Katie is back helping Felix with this master plan to get him re-enrolled into school. Quality character development.

The ending made no sense. I get it, they bugged the computer and recorded the principal’s plot convenient theft. I could have lived with that. The principal ends up stealing the drive and Danny goes “There’s a copy on the laptop!”. ˢᵒʳʳʸ ᵇᵘᵗ ᵗʰᵃᵗ’ˢ ʲᵘˢᵗ ᶰᵒᵗ ʰᵒʷ ᶜᵒᵐᵖᵘᵗᵉʳˢ ʷᵒʳᵏ⋅ Computers don’t record everything you do. There is nothing on that laptop that could have helped get Felix re-enrolled. I just–I have no more words. I’m drained after watching this movie.

After all that negativity, I’ll throw in a little positivity at the end. The part where Felix is trying to keep his mom from finding Ben so he throws the expensive bowl at the wall to distract her drew a genuine laugh out of me. This movie is a comedy and I laughed once in 90 minutes. Sorry, I said I’d stop the negativity but I guess I just had one more in me.
